Principal’s Report

James Blay

7 August 2026

Today is Principal's Day, and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our outstanding Assistant Principals, Vanessa Morrow, Matthew Willison and Chris Reid, who work tirelessly each day to provide the best possible learning environment for our students. Their leadership, commitment and genuine care for our school community are greatly appreciated. I would also like to make a very special mention of our substantive Principal, Tania Pearson, whose leadership has plays a significant role in shaping the positive culture and strong foundations that exist at Broadford Secondary College. Tania's presence is certainly being missed around the school, and we look forward to welcoming her back from long service leave in Term 4.

Earlier this week, we hosted our annual Semester One Awards Ceremony. Congratulations to all of the students who received an award. At the beginning of the ceremony, I spoke about the theme of going the extra mile, explaining that there are many different ways students can demonstrate this each day. I shared examples of students who consistently go above and beyond, including our Mamma Mia! cast and crew, who have spent countless hours rehearsing for what will no doubt be an outstanding production for our community. I also acknowledged students involved in our Elite Football Program, who showed incredible discipline by getting up during the cold, early mornings to attend additional training sessions. Equally important are the many students who quietly demonstrate excellence every day by wearing the correct uniform, arriving prepared for learning, bringing the right materials to class, seeking extra feedback from their teachers, or checking in on a friend who needs support. I encouraged all students to reflect on what the little extras might look like for them and to consider how they can continue striving for their personal best, whether in their academic studies, sport, the arts or other personal goals.

I would also like to give another shout out to our Mamma Mia! production team, who will open the show next week. This is definitely a performance not to be missed. Even if your child is not involved in the production, I encourage you to come along and support our talented students. Booking details can be found elsewhere in this newsletter.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the work of our leadership team and staff in responding to a number of issues that have originated through social media and subsequently impacted learning at school. While we are not responsible for what occurs on social media outside school hours, we are often required to manage the consequences when these issues flow into the school environment and affect student wellbeing and learning. We ask for your continued support by reminding your children that social media platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook have a minimum age requirement of 16 years. Encouraging responsible online behaviour and monitoring your child's use of social media can play an important role in helping us maintain a safe and respectful learning environment for everyone.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, and best of luck to all students participating in weekend sporting competitions and other activities.

Head Start News: Jessica Stevens

Jessica Stevens is a Year 11 student who recently commenced a school-based cooking apprenticeship at the Magpie & Stump Hotel in Wandong. Jessica completed work experience at the Hotel last year and was offered some casual work in the kitchen, which she gladly accepted. During her time working casually at the Hotel, Jessica developed a real interest in the cooking sector and wanted to explore if a school-based apprenticeship opportunity could be a possibility. Jessica spoke with Luke Marantelli, Hotel Manager who was very supportive and comfortable in assisting Jessica with her chosen career pathway.

Jessica is now working as a school-based apprentice during the week with training being provided by William Angliss who will visit the workplace to deliver the training.

Good luck Jessica,

Ridley Fundraiser

On Monday, the 10th of August, during lunch, Broadford Secondary College will celebrate Ridley Day. There will be a Sausage Sizzle in front of the Foods Room where you can buy a sausage for $2, and a Temporary Tattoo Station will be set in front of the Japanese Room, where teachers and staff have volunteered to receive temporary tattoos to help drive donations.
The chosen beneficiary for the fundraiser is Enchanted Rescue. They focus on rescuing cats and kittens in danger and are expanding their efforts to support dogs and puppies. It will be an out-of-uniform day (wear it red) with a gold coin donation going to this charity. We hope to see students participate in raising money for this worthy cause.
