Advocacy & Create My Story

Supporting students, families and teachers to work together, strengthen learning habits and guide every student through a confident secondary school journey.

Since 2006

A unique strength of Broadford Secondary College

Advocacy was introduced to help students transition smoothly from primary school to secondary school, where they may have many different teachers across the year.

Overview

Parents play a powerful role in student achievement.

Parents have the greatest influence on the achievement of young people through supporting their learning in the home. This support makes the maximum difference to achievement.

“Parents have the greatest influence on the achievement of young people through supporting their learning in the home.”

Harris and Goodall, 2007

At Broadford Secondary College, Advocacy helps students feel known, supported and connected. It gives students and families a clear point of contact during the important transition into secondary school.

Role of the Advocate

A trusted connection for students and families.

Advocates help students stay connected, organised and supported while creating a clear communication link with home.

Build a strong connection

Advocates get to know each student and build a positive, supportive relationship.

Support organisation

They help students manage routines, learning tasks, timetables, Compass and school expectations.

Guide Create My Story

Advocates help Year 8 students prepare for their Student-Family-Teacher goal setting conference.

Connect home and school

They act as a communication link between students, families and the wider school community.

Supporting at Home

Small routines at home can make a big difference.

Families can support student learning by staying connected, checking Compass regularly and encouraging strong organisation habits.

Stay connected through Compass

Compass helps families keep track of learning tasks, feedback, progress reports and important school communication.

Ask your child what they are learning at school.

Check Compass for outstanding learning tasks.

Regularly review feedback on School Assessed Coursework.

Read Progress Reports every five weeks and end of semester reports.

Attend Parent Teacher Student Conferences in Terms 1 and 3.

Check your child’s bag and books occasionally to support organisation.

Encourage one book per subject to help maintain clear learning routines.

Talk with your child about any classroom or yard concerns and let the advocate know.

Read the school newsletter every second Friday to stay informed.
