Our approach

A purposeful connection between school and home

The College has refined its assessment and reporting processes so families can better understand, support and engage with their child’s learning journey.

Assessment and reporting at Broadford Secondary College is designed to provide a clear picture of both academic achievement and learning behaviours. Continuous feedback gives students and families timely information throughout the semester, while progress reports and semester reports provide structured checkpoints for reflection, celebration and support.

Reporting model

How progress is communicated

Families receive information through multiple channels, each with a clear purpose in supporting student learning and development.

Assessment

Assessment helps teachers understand student achievement against Individual Education Plans and Victorian Curriculum Levels, while supporting curriculum planning and improved teaching practice.

Continuous Feedback

Students receive regular feedback through written comments or developmental rubrics on Compass so they can understand strengths, identify next steps and act on feedback while learning is still happening.

Progress Reports

Progress reports provide regular updates on learning behaviours including Respect, Responsibility, Organisation, Persistence and Excellence. They also help monitor each student’s Grade Point Average.

Semester Reports

Semester reports provide Victorian Curriculum Levels twice a year and reflect academic achievement only, separate from effort and learning behaviours.

PAT Testing

Progressive Achievement Tests measure achievement and growth in English and Mathematics. Results help staff plan targeted teaching and learning programs.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN assesses key literacy and numeracy skills and is used alongside teacher assessment and PAT data to better support individual learning needs.

Compass feedback

What feedback looks like

For School Assessed Coursework, students receive written feedback or a Compass Developmental Rubric. Feedback is designed to help students understand what they have done well and what they need to improve next.

Students with Individual Education Plans

In exceptional circumstances, and only with family consultation and consent, alternative grading components may be used to recognise progress towards individual learning goals.

English as an Additional Language

Eligible EAL students are assessed against the EAL Victorian Curriculum, with individual planning used to support learning growth and access to the curriculum.

Vocational Education and Training

Students completing VET subjects may receive feedback through IVET or other course platforms rather than Compass, depending on the provider and program.

Recognition

Celebrating achievement and positive behaviour

Broadford Secondary College recognises student achievement, growth and commitment to school values through Mid-Year and End-of-Year Awards Nights.

Positive Acknowledgments, known as Pozzies, are recorded on Compass when students demonstrate expected behaviours. Merits recognise above-and-beyond behaviour, and students can qualify for rewards through consistent positive conduct.
