Principal’s Report

Tania Pearson

20 May 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

Towards the end of Term 2, we say goodbye to a very long-standing staff member and Assistant Principal, Cathy Coppinger. Cathy will start long service leave on 17th June for the remainder of 2026. At the conclusion of this, Cathy will retire from the Department of Education. She will be greatly missed and I thank her, on behalf of the school community for her dedication to BSC. Stepping into the role of Acting Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning will be Vanessa Morrow. As of Monday 18th May, Monica Isip will commence as the Year 10 Coordinator. Thank you to Tenille Matthews for her work in this space.

Unfortunately, in the latest state budget, Broadford Secondary College did not receive funding to support the building of Stage 1 of our Master Plan, a two storey STEAM Centre. The development of the Master Plan will continue and be ready for if or when funding becomes available. We anticipate an increase in student numbers for 2027 now that families who live in Kilmore can choose where they wish to send their children to secondary school. We have already welcomed many to our transition tours. To accommodate this increase we have been guaranteed two more mod 10 portables to be delivered and constructed in preparation for the 2027 school year. This equates to 8 extra general-purpose classrooms. Due to a lack of specialty rooms, some electives may be reduced in some year levels next year. The three current mod 10 portables are currently powered by diesel generator as the school does not have the power supply to support these additional buildings. I am hopeful that a power upgrade will occur prior to the additional portables arriving. I am extremely proud and grateful to our dedicated staff who continually adapt to ensure students get the best education within our current facilities.

A wonderful day earlier in the week with our annual school cross-country event. It was great to see so many students participate either running or walking and earning points for their house. Congratulations again to Piper House for winning the event.
A reminder that Monday 18th May is a student free day, staff will be undertaking professional development on this day. Buses will run as per normal for the primary school students.

Kind regards,

Tania Pearson

VCE GEOGRAPHY GRAMPIANS CAMP

As part of their studies about hazards, tourism and land use change, the Year 11 and 12 Geography students went to the Grampians (Gariwerd) region for four days in late April and early May.
Two travel days, which involved stops in the towns of Maryborough and Avoca, to see the silo art, were complemented by two full days venturing around Horsham, Stawell and Halls Gap, and walking through the Grampians National Park. The students thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of the town visits, which included clothes shopping for some. Many stepped out of their comfort zone by completing the Pinnacle walk at Halls Gap, and the walk to the aptly named ‘Bird Rock’ near Mt Stapylton.

Our stay at Roses Gap was enjoyable, with the beautiful natural scenery and plenty of wildlife showcasing what the Grampians is all about. Campfires and games in ‘Bob’s Shed’ during the evenings allowed students to socialise with each other, building new friendships and consolidating others.
Many thanks to Ms Price and Mrs Morrow, who offered their time and efforts to ensure the students had a memorable experience. They must have enjoyed the time away, as several of them have requested that Mr Reid organise another fieldwork excursion next term.

Mitchell – Honbetsu Sister City News

Did you know that Mitchell Shire has a sister city in Japan called Honbetsu?
Over the past 35 years we have arranged for Mitchell shire residents to visit Honbetsu. We have also had host families from Mitchell looking after Japanese students when they visit here. This sister city relationship has been a great way for people in Mitchell Shire to experience Japanese culture.

Are you interested in visiting our sister city – Honbetsu – in Japan?
We (the Mitchell – Honbetsu committee) are very pleased to be able to announce that we are sending a group of Mitchell Shire residents over to Honbetsu, our sister city in the September school holidays.
We would love to have some representatives from B.S.C. to represent the youth side of Mitchell Shire. You would have the opportunity to stay with a Japanese family and really experience everyday life in Japan.
We have called a meeting for Wednesday 3rd June, 7.00pm at Norcen House, High St, Wallan for a Q and A evening and discussion on the proposed delegation. Everyone is welcome to check it out before they make a decision.
If you are keen, you can register your interest by sending an email
to mitchell.honbetsu@gmail.com
People can choose to decide their own travel plans, but the main dates must be included in their travel plans.
• Arrive in Sapporo (Hokkaido Island) by Wednesday the 23rd September. Stay 2 nights. We can help with hotel locations.
• Buy local train ticket on the Thursday as a group.
• Travel by train on the Friday as a group to Obihiro (the nearest large town to Honbetsu)
• From there you will be collected by Coach and taken to Honbetsu.
• Delegates will then be looked after for 5 nights.
• This would include, catering, sightseeing, meeting the locals and some homestay. A great cultural experience!!!
• On the morning of Wednesday 30th September, delegates will then depart and be taken back to Obihiro.
• From there they can continue their journey or can then go back to Sapporo and fly home.

All of this can be discussed at the meeting.
This can be a great way of experiencing first time international travel in a safe way with others.

Are you interested in hosting a Japanese student from our sister city, Honbetsu?

Also - in October, we have 24 students and 5 adults visiting Mitchell Shire, so we are also asking for any family or person who is interested in hosting, to register their interest by email.
Arrival date Friday 16th October. Departure date Tuesday 20th October. 4 nights.
If you have any questions or would just like to find out more about hosting in October, please contact Gayle Phillips at this email: mitchell.honbetsu@gmail.com
You can also contact Steph Paton (Japanese teacher) at BSC if you would like to find out more.

CSEF

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)

Check with the school office if you are unsure
School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are a part of a healthy curriculum.
CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.
